[INTI x Sunview] Sustainability: Your Win-Win for Business & Planet

Sustainability: A Business Strategy

Sustainability has become a key focus for businesses worldwide, and Malaysia is no exception. With the local solar industry expected to grow at an annual rate of 2.34% from 2025 to 2029, the time is now for your business to get involved.

Small firms in Malaysia can play a significant role in addressing urgent environmental concerns, by transitioning their business towards more sustainable operations. By implementing sustainable practices, Malaysian companies can become more competitive in a market that is becoming more environmentally conscious, while contributing to Malaysia’s net-zero goals.

As part of an employer project with Sunview, and the students of INTI, here are practical ways Malaysian businesses can adopt sustainable practices that benefit their bottom-lines and the environment.

1. Limiting Waste

One of the first, and easiest places to start is waste reduction. By using techniques like recycling, reusing materials and opting for minimal packaging, businesses can:

  • Significantly decrease the amount of garbage that ends up in landfills
  • Cut costs on materials
  • Improve brand image
  • Even simple changes like ditching single-use plastics can create a cleaner environment.

2. Contribute Towards Nation’s Sustainability Targets

Malaysia is aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050 and 70% renewable energy (RE) capacity in the same year. Your business can play a part by:

  • Investing in digital tools like emission monitoring software to track and optimise greenhouse gas emissions,
  • Switching to electric or hybrid fleets to cut fossil fuel reliance,
  • Adopting sustainable practices across all operations.

By acting now, businesses can future proof their operations and stay ahead of regulatory changes.

3. Embrace Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a win-win for business owners. By upgrading to energy-efficient equipment, appliances and lighting, businesses can reduce their energy usage and gain long-term savings. Long-term operational expenses are decreased by these actions, which also support the worldwide movement towards a higher use of clean energy sources.

Pro tip: Take advantage of appliances that come with the 5-star energy efficiency label—they are designed to use less energy and protect the environment while complying with the energy-efficient guidelines set by the Energy Commission.

4. Leverage Malaysia’s Solar Incentives

Malaysia offers several incentives and schemes to encourage the adoption of renewable energy among businesses.

  • Solar ATAP: Where excess energy from the solar photovoltaic (PV) system will be exported to TNB with and credited back to the electricity bill.
  • Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA): Where businesses can claim 60% of qualifying capital expenditure incurred during the period of 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2026 in qualifying activities such as RE projects, energy efficiency, or Qualifying assets approved by the Minister.

These programs make it easier for your business to save money while strengthening its ESG performance and reputation.
