Youth: Leading a Greener Malaysia

Climate change isn’t a distant problem — it’s happening now.

As we all know, climate change has become a big issue in recent years and requires immediate action. With the planet facing biodiversity loss, rising temperatures, and resource depletion, every decision we make leaves a mark. This necessitates striking a balance between social advancement, economic growth, and environmental preservation. To save our future, we must take responsibility for our actions by living sustainably.

As part of an employer project between Sunview and the students of INTI, we unpack how Malaysia’s youth are not just participating in sustainabilitythey’re leading the charge for a greener tomorrow.

Awareness Alone Isn’t Enough — Action is Key

One of the primary goals of sustainability advocacy is to raise awareness about the critical issue of climate change and inspire social change; But while sustainability awareness is growing, knowledge without action is like a light bulb with no electricity — useless.

How Can Awareness Meet Action?

Education plays a vital role in laying the foundation for environmentally responsible habits — to achieve long-term sustainability, we must start young as the habits we form during the early stages of our lives, shape the world we build later. That’s why, integrating sustainable practices into schools is crucial as we face urgent environmental concerns.

Schools could take sustainability beyond the classroom by:

  • Integrating environmental issues into everyday discussions
  • Organising eco-clubs to promote green initiatives
  • Encouraging tree-planting and recycling programs

By engaging in hands-on activities, students don’t just learn about sustainability — they live it. It instills a sense of responsibility towards eco-friendly living, going beyond knowledge to real-world impact.

Sustainable Choices — Every Effort Counts

To prevent further environmental damage, we, as a society, must embrace sustainable practices. For instance, we can choose to use more sustainable items, utilise energy-efficient equipment, and reduce single-use plastics.

But sustainability isn’t just about personal habits — it’s about fair access to resources. For everyone to benefit from social growth, we must also allocate resources equitably. Only by doing so can we truly achieve long-term sustainable development and make the planet a thriving home for ourselves and future generations.

Greener Transportation: The Road to a Cleaner Future

Transport is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions. But what if we all made smarter choices? We all have a role to play, and we can contribute to lowering the nation’s carbon footprint by using eco-friendly modes of transportation such as:

  • Cycling or walking for short distances
  • Choosing electric vehicles or hybrid cars
  • Opting for public transportation such as buses, Light Rail Transit (LRT), Electric Train Service (ETS), and KLIA Express.

Less Traffic, Less Pollution, More Savings. A Win-Win for All.

The 5R Mindset: Rethink, Repair, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

Next, everyone can embrace the 5R’s — Rethink, Repair, Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, a simple yet effective approach to sustainability. Have you ever wondered how much waste you generate daily? The 5R’s aren’t just guidelines—they’re a mindset shift.

  • Rethink your purchases — Do you really need that extra plastic bag?
  • Repair instead of replacing — Fix your broken appliances, and gadgets instead of tossing them.
  • Reuse alternatives to single-use plastics — water bottles, tote bags, and food containers.
  • Reduce waste by cutting down on unnecessary electricity, water and food consumption.
  • Recycle by properly sorting waste to minimise landfill impact.

By incorporating the 5R’s into daily life, we can break the cycle of wastefulness and take a step towards a cleaner, healthier planet.
